Take Your Biker Jacket to the Next Level with a DIY Plaid Trim
1/16What You Need
-A biker jacket
-1 yard of plaid fabric
-Scissors
-Wax paper
-Fabric glue
-A permanent marker
-Tailor's chalk
2/16Prep the Jacket
Lay the jacket open with the inside facing up and spread the collar flat.
3/16Trace the Collar
Place a sheet of wax paper over the collar, and trace the neckline and collar seams.
4/16Trace the Lapels
Lay one of the lapels flat, and trace the shape on a new piece of wax paper. The inside edge should continue until the lining begins. Check to see if your jacket is symmetrical by flipping this shape over on the opposite lapel. If it fits, your jacket is symmetrical! If it doesn't fit, trace the second side's lapel with a third piece of wax paper.
5/16Trace on the Fabric
Lay the collar form on top of the fabric in the direction of the plaid. Trace the shape with tailor's chalk.
6/16Cut out the Shapes
Cut the collar and lapel forms from the wax paper. If your jacket is symmetrical, you will have two shapes. If it's not, you'll have three.
7/16Cut out the Collar
Remove the wax paper and cut out the collar fabric.
8/16Trace the Lapel on the Fabric
Place the lapel shape on the fabric and trace in the same manner.
9/16Trace the Second Lapel
If your jacket is symmetrical, flip the lapel form and trace the second side. If it's not symmetrical, trace the third pattern piece.
10/16Apply Glue to the Collar
Lay the collar flat in its original position. Spread glue near the edges and evenly across the collar.
11/16Cut out the Lapels
Cut out the fabric for both lapels.
12/16Apply the Fabric to the Collar
Lay the plaid collar over the glue and press into place.
13/16Apply the Fabric to the Lapels
Repeat the process on each lapel, covering the area in glue and laying down the material.
14/16Clean Up the Collar
Carefully trim any excess fabric.
15/16Let It Dry
Press the material into place. This is how your fabric should lay on the jacket.
