How To Make Spectator Brogue Sneakers
1/15Cut Leather
Begin by cutting a piece of leather that's as wide as the top of the shoe.
2/15What You Need
-White sneakers
-A small piece of black leather or faux leather fabric
-Fabric scissors
-Tailor chalk
-Disappearing fabric marker
-Permanent fabric marker (we used Stained by Sharpie)
3/15Mark Grommet Distance
Fold the piece in half, with the right side (the nice side of the fabric) on the outside, and hold it against the laces. Draw chalk marks on the folded piece to note the distance between the grommets.
4/15Draw Trapezoid
With the piece still folded, draw a trapezoid with the top narrow end at the fold.
5/15Cut Out Trapezoid
Cut the trapezoid out.
6/15Marks Dots and Draw Lines
Mark two dots for holes just below the fold, lining up with your marks from the grommets. Draw lines at the cut end of the trapezoid to note where you will cut fringe.
7/15Cut Holes and Fringe
Keeping the fabric folded, carefully cut small holes where you marked, slicing through both layers. Then cut the fringe.
8/15Draw Wingtip
Using the disappearing fabric marker, draw a wingtip shape on the front of the first shoe and bring it around the sides. This ink will disappear (as the name would indicate!), so take your time to make the shape nice and even—any mistakes will fade away!
9/15Snip Corners
Snip the corners off each bit of fringe for a polished pointed shape. Repeat steps one through seven on a second piece of leather, fold the pieces right side out, and set aside.
10/15Draw Half-Circle
Draw a half-circle over the heel.
11/15Draw Small Circles
Draw small circles just below the line.
12/15Traces Lines with Permanent Marker and Draw Triangles
When your lines are even and clean, trace them with the permanent marker. Then draw triangles above the lines all the way around the shoe.
13/15Cut Leather
Carefully fill in the wingtip shape with the permanent fabric marker, shading in the triangles for a zig-zag edge and leaving the insides of the circles white. Repeat steps eight through twelve on the second shoe.
14/15Thread Lace Through Fringe Piece
Untie the shoes and unthread the laces from the top two holes. Thread each lace through the back of the fringe piece (it should still be folded, so you will thread through two layers). Pull the laces through the top grommet holes, and tie in bows.
